Why You Should Surround Yourself with Awesome People

Why You Should Surround Yourself with Awesome People

Jim Rohn, a famous motivational speaker, is known for saying that “You’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” I’ve heard variations of that adage in speeches, videos on YouTube, and from a close colleague.

A couple years ago, a colleague of mine told me that her mom taught her that early in life to encourage her to hang out with people who were positive influences. I guess it worked. She is currently a successful educator, and a terrific family woman.

I can relate. When I was in high school, I started hanging out with a guy who I thought was cool, but didn’t have the best of habits. He was really nice, but he didn’t really care about school. He wanted to hang out more than anything, and when we hung out, I didn’t have any time for my homework. I felt myself slipping in school, and I knew that this friendship couldn’t last.

Luckily, that wasn’t the norm. Growing up, I’ve been lucky to have lots of good friends. I have friends who have been good examples and role models for me. My close friends showed me how to socialize with others, how seriously to take school, and how to have fun. With them, I’ve had many great memories and learned how to make more.

The people you spend most of your time with have a significant impact on your well-being.  Whether you know it or not (or like it or not), they are influencing you. These people can either lift you up or bring you down. Their habits influence your habits. What they say influences how you think and how you feel, especially about yourself. With that in mind, be mindful of who you spend your time with.
