Hope is that spark that keeps us going in the darkness. It's our lighthouse that keeps us from straying to the side. In our darkest times, hope is the thing that we need to hold most onto.
I've been lucky enough to say that I haven't had many difficult times, but I do have a few. It's been where I felt that my life was going downhill and everything looked bleak to me. My wife was my rock; she gave me hope. She told me that we'll be okay and that we'd make it through. I didn't see it at that time, but she was right. We made it through (so far).
That's a lesson that took me many years to learn. No matter what, there is always hope. It may sound cheesy, but it's true. If things get bad, there is always hope because things can always get better. And if you've hit rock bottom, there is still hope because there is nowhere else to go but up. As hard as it is to see sometimes, hope is always there; you just have to search/dig/pry for it.
Now, no matter what my family, friends, and I face, in the current social, political, economical, and environmental situation, we can't give up. We have to hope.
